Mitchell loses herself in Waiting City

posted on July 16, 2010

The Waiting City

RADHA Mitchell has survived a saliva-dripping encounter with a giant croc (Rogue) and toughed it out on an alien planet inhabited by flesh-eating bats (Pitch Black).

But, compared with the emotionally wrenching process of adopting a child in India, a subject she explores in a new Australian drama, those cinematic experiences resemble child's play.

Directed by Claire McCarthy, The Waiting City tells the keenly observed story of a childless couple who travel to Kolkata to complete their family unit. »

Radha Mitchell’s ‘horrific’ Ganges experience

posted on July 15, 2010

The Waiting City

Melbourne, July 15 – Australian actress Radha Mitchell has opened up about how she was asked to take a dip in the mythic but also extremely polluted Ganges as part of her role in a new movie ‘The Waiting City’.

“There really were pigs running around where we were shooting the scene. And snakes swimming in the water,” the Daily Telegraph quoted her as saying.

“But there were also people washing their clothes and bathing. It was sublime and also horrific the two things at once,” she added.

When it came to actually putting her head under the water, however, the occupational. »

The Waiting City: Australia goes to India

posted on July 6, 2010

The Waiting City

Director Claire McCarthy and producer Jamie Hilton have made a film with an Australian heart and dressed up in a colourful sari, taking our cinema to a new land full of creative and business opportunities. Miguel Gonzalez reports.

The Waiting City tells the story of an Australian couple who arrive in Calcutta, India, to pick up the girl they have adopted. Unaware that local bureaucracy will force them to wait for days before they can see her for the first time, the stress of waiting, amplified by the culture shock, will test their relationship as they are forced to confront the problems they’ve been avoiding for a long time.

It is not based on a true story, but many that writer/director Claire McCarthy witnessed as she built her own relationship with India.

McCarthy’s connection with the country was born in 2002 when, along with her younger sister Helena, »

Take Three: Radha Mitchell

posted on July 6, 2010

Two Melindas in one for Woody Allen, a video game avatar made flesh in Silent Hill and a sensual magazine intern in High Art aside (plus central roles in The Waiting City, The Children of Huang Shi and Visitors), Radha Mitchell has peppered her career with solid, dependable and intriguing supporting roles. The leads may be few and far between, but Mitchell has delivered quality input on film and television for the last two decades. She's a genre girl at heart - an amiable trait about this Australian character actress.

Take One: Don't croc the boat, baby

Croc horror flick Rogue (2007) came out without much fanfare last year (limited Us theatrical release, DVD premiere in the UK) - a shame as it was one of the more enjoyable monster movies of recent times. Essentially Lake Placid with a shade more atmosphere (but, »

Radha Mitchell is a Bipolar Badass Cop in A&E’s The Quickening

posted on July 1, 2010

The Quickening

No, it’s not yet another “Highlander” sequel/reboot or TV series, in case that’s what you were thinking. It’s called “The Quickening”, and it’s a new cop show from A&E (cause, obviously, there isn’t nearly enough cop shows on TV at the moment) set to star Radha Mitchell, known primarily for her movie roles in films like “Silent Hill”, “Surrogates”, and the upcoming “The Crazies” remake. While this will be Mitchell’s first foray onto American TV land as the lead, it won’t be the first time an actress known for her movie work decided to take the leap onto the small screen. She follows in the footsteps of other notable movie leading ladies Kyra Sedgwick (the star of TNT’s cop show “The Closer”) and Holly Hunter (the star of TNT’s other cop show “Saving Grace” — gee, starting to see a pattern here?).

Mitchell playing a character name Maggie Bird, a homicide detective assigned to a desk job after her bipolar disorder is revealed to all. Unfortunately for the bad guys, the disorder makes Bird one heck of a cop. On the flip side, and unfortunately for her boyfriends, it also turns her personal life into crap. But hey, it’s Radha Mitchell, so I’m sure plenty of guys will be lining up to give it a try anyway. That’s just how we roll. Mitchell’s Bird will be struggling with taking her meds and leaving a normal life, or catching bad guys while off it. Decisions, decisions.

FABLife’s DVD Pick Of The Week

posted on July 1, 2010

The Crazies

We’ve all been burnt by bad horror movie remakes. Nightmare on Elm Street couldn’t have stunk any harder if Freddie Krueger had personally tea-bagged the viewer. So hurrah for The Crazies, a taut update on George A. Romero’s 1973 chiller. The premise is simple: a town’s good citizens are very quickly becoming homicidal maniacs and nobody is sure why. When the army moves in to restore order, things only get worse. Justified’s Timothy Olyphant is the upright sheriff who is just trying to get the hell out of there, while wifey Radha Mitchell is turning into quite a scream queen. The suspense scenes are well-handled, too: Olyphant’s attempt to fight off a pair of nutzoids with a knife sticking out his hand ranks as one of the best action sequences of the year.»

[Blu-Review] The Crazies

posted on July 1, 2010

The Crazies

With all remakes there runs the risk of ruining the original or improving upon it. With Breck Eisner‘s The Crazies, a remake of the 1973 George A. Romero original, we get the latter. Known for the 2005 blockbuster Sahara, Eisner has done a great job reinventing this film and turning into a shocker for the current desensitized generation. Not only is the story inventive, but the direction of the film sets us up for great suspense and thrills that are lacking in most modern horror films. The writers, Scott Kosar & Ray Wright, did a great job with the dialog and setting this film up with the right atmosphere.
This ‘dream turned nightmare’ starts off showing us glimpses of the small all-American town of Ogden Marsh, where no one bothers lock their doors and everyone is on a first name basis. Things quickly go awry as residents start acting strangely and suddenly start turning into rabid bloodthirsty killers. We find out that an unknown toxin is the cause of the widespread epidemic and the town is quietly and quickly quarantined by the military. The local man in charge, Sheriff Dutton (Timothy Olyphant) and his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell) lead a small group of townsfolk that try to escape the quarantine while also trying to make sense of the escalating madness. The government, using deadly force, sets up check points to separate the uninfected from those that are starting to show signs of the contagion. What started out as a regular night in a small town, quickly turns into fight for survival for a small group of survivors that will do anything to live. The story gives us enough suspense and shocks in all the right places. While a veteran to the horror scene will probably be able to see where the story is headed, normal movie goers will definitely be in for a few surprises.»

Shiny new poster for The Waiting City

posted on July 1, 2010

The Waiting City

Joel Edgerton's career seems to be going gangbusters now. He's currently being seen in Australian cinemas in the blistering crime drama Animal Kingdom, and has also recently filmed Warrior (opposite Tom Hardy) and The Thing prequel, in the lead role.
Just to prove he doesn't only play tough bastards, here's the sparkling new poster for his romantic drama The Waiting City, directed by Clare McCarthy and shot in India.
Here is the film's synopsis, from the website of the Sydney Film Festival, where The Waiting City has reportedly screened to fairly unanimous critical approval:
Fiona (Radha Mitchell) and Ben (Joel Edgerton) arrive in India expecting to end the long wait for their adopted child Lakshmi only to encounter bureaucratic hitches that further delay the much anticipated union. The couple react differently to the frustrating circumstances, Fiona immersing herself in work, Ben giving way to the rhythms of the city »
